What is SaaS?

The acronym SaaS stands for “Software as a Service”.

SaaS is a cloud technology wherein users can use the software without installing it on their computer, through the cloud. Updates, maintenance and security strategies are provided by the Service Provider or Owner of the SaaS software. A customer will only need to pay a periodic fee for usage. Usage options and time period of usage can be customized based on business needs. A very good example of SaaS is Stadioplus’s Tech.

What is SaaS and what is it for?

Historically, corporations that required management software typically hired an IT Service Provider to develop the software, install, maintain, update and manage security of such technology on the corporations local computers. All costs associated with these activities were borne by the corporation availing this service. The usage of this software is limited to few computers where such software was installed, and it was impossible to access these services from remote locations.

What SaaS does is overcome these limitations. SaaS allows business to become more agile; by moving on premises software solutions into the cloud, businesses can eliminate the expenses and responsibilities associated with managing and maintaining costly in-house servers. At the same time, they can more easily keep updated on the new patches and features, increase the speed of their own software deployments and configurations, reduce their dependance on additional IT staff and free up in-house professionals to focus their efforts on more strategic concerns. SaaS is available 24 hours a day and 365 days a year with unlimited access from any computer or mobile device with an internet connection.
