He began his career in single-seater racing in 2004. Three years later he was British Formula 3 champion. He debuted in GP2 Series in 2009 and was runner-up the following year.

He made his Formula 1 debut in 2011 with Sauber. The following season he scored three podiums and moved to McLaren for 2013. After a season with the British team, he was hired by Force India, which then became Racing Point. In these two, he podiumed in seven races. In 2020, he achieved the first victory in his career by winning the Sakhir GP, becoming the second Mexican after Pedro Rodríguez to win a Grand Prix. In 2021 he became a Red Bull Racing driver.
